SSW automobile maintenance practice questions with answers
The quickest way to see what the Tokutei Ginou car mechanic test feels like is to answer a few items yourself. This page has 12 true/false items and one sample practical task, each with furigana, an English translation, the answer and a short explanation.
Last updated: 2026-10-12
At a glance
- 12sample ○× items: 6 true, 6 false
- 1sample practical task, 3 two-choice items
- 65%theory pass mark (20/30)
- 780items across the app's 20 papers
How to use this page
Read the Japanese first and do not look at the translation straight away. Decide ○ or × yourself, then open "Show answer". When you miss one, read the explanation carefully: most mistakes come from one swapped word (high/low, open/closed, rises/falls), not from missing knowledge. That is the most common trap in the real test too; see how to answer true/false items.
12 theory ○× items with answers
A four-stroke engine completes one cycle of intake, compression, combustion and exhaust while the crankshaft turns twice.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True. Each stroke is half a crankshaft turn, so four strokes take two turns. The camshaft turns once in that time, at half crankshaft speed.
The thermostat opens when the coolant is cold and lets coolant flow to the radiator.
Show answer
Answer: × False. When the coolant is cold the thermostat stays closed so the engine warms up quickly. It opens as the coolant gets hot.
Engine oil level is checked with the dipstick with the vehicle on level ground, after the engine has been stopped for a while.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True. On a slope, or before the oil has drained back to the oil pan, the dipstick reads wrong.
When brake fluid absorbs moisture, its boiling point rises.
Show answer
Answer: × False. Moisture lowers the boiling point, so vapour can form when the brakes get hot (vapour lock). That is why brake fluid is replaced periodically.
One division on a micrometer thimble is 0.01 mm.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True for the common type: the screw pitch is 0.5 mm and the thimble has 50 divisions, so each is 0.5 ÷ 50 = 0.01 mm.
When measuring resistance with a circuit tester, measure with voltage still applied to the circuit.
Show answer
Answer: × False. Resistance is measured with the circuit unpowered. With voltage applied the reading is wrong and the tester can be damaged.
As disc brake pads wear, the brake fluid level in the reservoir drops.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True. Worn pads let the caliper piston move further out and fluid fills the space, so the level falls slowly. A low level means check the pads and look for leaks, not just top up.
The specific gravity of battery electrolyte rises as the battery discharges.
Show answer
Answer: × False. During discharge the sulphuric acid reacts with the plates and the electrolyte becomes weaker, so the specific gravity falls. Charging raises it again.
Shallow tyre grooves make hydroplaning more likely on rainy days.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True. The grooves drain water from under the tyre; with shallow grooves the water cannot escape and the tyre rides on it.
A torque wrench is a good tool for loosening a seized bolt.
Show answer
Answer: × False. A torque wrench is a measuring tool for tightening to a set torque; forcing a seized bolt with it can damage it and ruin its accuracy.
The alternator generates AC and rectifies it to DC with diodes.
Show answer
Answer: ○ True. The battery and the vehicle's loads use DC, so the diode rectifier inside the alternator converts AC to DC.
It is best to open the radiator cap and top up coolant while the engine is still hot.
Show answer
Answer: × False. A hot cooling system is under pressure; opening the cap can spray boiling coolant and cause burns. Wait until the engine has cooled.
A sample practical task with answers
The practical part has 3 tasks. Each task is one job followed by a few two-choice items, and most items in the real test come with a figure. The sample below is removing and refitting a road wheel, a job every mechanic does daily.
(Removing and refitting a road wheel)
When working under a vehicle raised with a jack, which is appropriate?
Work with the vehicle held up by the jack only.
Support the vehicle on rigid racks (jack stands) first.
Show answer
Answer: B. A jack can sink or tip; support the vehicle on stands before going underneath.
Which order for tightening the wheel nuts is appropriate?
Tighten in a diagonal pattern, in several passes.
Tighten each nut fully in turn, going round to the next one.
Show answer
Answer: A. A diagonal pattern in several passes seats the wheel evenly on the hub.
Which is appropriate for the final tightening?
Tighten to the specified torque with a torque wrench.
Tighten as hard as possible with an impact wrench.
Show answer
Answer: A. Over-tightening can stretch studs or distort the brake disc; under-tightening lets the wheel come loose.
What the samples teach
- Knowing the function is enough. If you know what a thermostat is for, "opens when cold" is obviously false. No memorising needed.
- Safety is the answer. Work items usually offer one safe, by-the-book choice and one "faster but risky" choice. Choose the safe one.
- Measuring tools have their own rules. Power off for resistance; a torque wrench is for tightening only. See how to read a caliper, micrometer and dial gauge.
- Vocabulary decides your speed. If 摩耗, 比重 and 沸点 read instantly, you have time to think. See car part names in Japanese.
Keep going with full mock papers
Twelve items are only a warm-up. A real sitting has 30 theory items in 60 minutes and 3 practical tasks in 20 minutes. The Gino 1 Seibi app has 20 papers in that layout, 780 items in total, each with an explanation. A correct answer moves on by itself; a wrong answer stops and explains straight away. Papers 1 to 3 are free.
VIP unlocks papers 4 to 20 and the detailed explanations for missed items. VIP is bought inside the iOS app with Apple payment, and Apple shows the price. The App Store version is coming soon. You can try the free exams on the web now.

FAQ
Are these the real exam questions?
No. ViMai wrote them for this page, following the scope and format JASPA publishes. Real test items are not posted here. For the official sample questions, see the JASPA test page.
Where can I find past papers (過去問)?
This page does not post real test items. Start with the official samples on the JASPA page. JASPA also publishes past Class 3 (3級) mechanic papers with answers; the (i) test is set at about the Class 3 level, so they are good extra practice, although they use four-choice items instead of ○×.
Do real test items have furigana?
Yes. Under the MLIT rules the kanji in the test carry furigana. The samples on this page have furigana too, so you get used to the readings.
Where can I practise more?
The Gino 1 Seibi app has 20 papers, each with 30 ○× items and 9 practical items. Papers 1 to 3 are free and open in the browser.
