Gino 1 Seibi › Booking on Prometric
Registering for the SSW (i) automobile maintenance test
JASPA runs the test, but booking and payment happen on the website of Prometric, the company that delivers the CBT test. Below are the eligibility rules, the steps in order and what to prepare.

Eligibility
Under the MLIT rules and the JASPA documents, candidates for the (i) test must be 17 or older on the test day; Indonesian nationals must be 18 or older. To test in Japan you must hold a residence status (holders of certain passports named by the Ministry of Justice are excluded). The (i) test does not require work experience; three years at a certified garage is a condition of the (ii) test.
Where to find test dates
The test is not held on one fixed day a year. The JASPA test page publishes schedules for Japan and for overseas sites (the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia), and open dates and times appear when you book on Prometric. This page does not list dates because they change from round to round: check the JASPA page directly before you plan. Book early, then plan your study backwards from the test date, for example with the 30-day plan.
Booking steps
- Read the JASPA exam page. It has the test summary, sample theory and practical papers, and the booking notes.
- Open the Prometric page for the (i) test. Choose 自動車整備分野特定技能1号評価試験, not the (ii) test or another sector, and follow the instructions there.
- Pick a venue, date and time with a free seat. The 2024 summary lists all 47 prefectures of Japan, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, Cebu and Davao.
- Pay the fee. Payment methods differ by country; see Prometric. The fee is not refunded, even if you do not sit the test.
- Keep your booking details and test ID. You need the ID to check your result.
Fees in the 2024 documents
| Where | Fee |
|---|---|
| Japan (47 prefectures) | 4,300 yen (tax incl.) |
| Philippines (Manila, Cebu, Davao) | 1,700 PHP |
| Other countries | Local fee shown on Prometric |
Test day
Under the MLIT rules your identity is checked with a passport or similar ID, your belongings are checked, personal items go into a locker, your photo is taken for the score report and smartphones are not allowed in. Cheating ends the test, cancels the result and can bar you from testing for a period. Arrive early to check in.
Results and the certificate
Within about 30 days of the test, JASPA posts the passing ID numbers on its website. The pass certificate is requested from JASPA by the accepting company once an employment contract with you is decided (the MLIT handbook gives an issue fee of 16,000 yen). It is valid for 10 years from the test date and can be reissued once.
According to the JASPA page, from April 2026 candidates can view their score report (スコアレポート) on the Prometric portal. The score report is not a pass certificate. See also how the pass mark works.
Passing alone does not give 特定技能 1号 status: you also need Japanese (JLPT N4 or higher, or JFT-Basic), a contract with an accepting company and immigration screening. See also the exam format and the free mock exams.
